Abounding Grace [Devotional]

abounding grace god gives an abundance

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written:

“He has dispersed abroad,

He has given to the poor;

His righteousness endures forever (2 Corinthians 9: 8, 9 NKJV).

I focused on giving in Chapter 22 of my book, By the Will of God and while we touched on the idea of being blessed in proportion to our giving, I want to focus a bit more in this post on God’s provision for your EVERY need.

I’ve always thought of the above Scripture to mean that God will give you everything you need for the work He’s called you to do. And I do believe that is true. But I love the slightly different emphasis in the New Living Translation:

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others (2 Corinthians 9:8 NLT).

What I love about God’s provision, is that it’s more than enough. Think about it! He doesn’t give you just enough to squeak by but instead gives an abundance. In fact, He gives you what you need, and then some, so that you can share the overflow with others.

He will also give you more than you need to face the giants in your life. A friend once asked me why God instructed David to pick up five smooth stones when he only needed one to slay Goliath. I believe that this is another illustration of God giving beyond what is needed. Another example is when Jesus fed the 5,000. The disciples started off with a little boy’s lunch, and after God had multiplied what they had to work with, they were not only able to feed everyone present, they had a ton of leftovers.

If you’re facing a giant, simply want to know how to feed your family well, or are overwhelmed by something God’s calling you to do, trust that He will give you all that you need, and then some! Will you trust Him today?

Praying the Word

Lord, thank You for your promise to give me everything I need, and in fact, even more than I need. Help me to trust You not only for Your provision but for the way that You’ll equip me to face and slay my giants.

Applying the Word

Are you facing something that seems too big for you? Do you feel like you don’t have enough to take care of the needs of those around you? Step out in faith and obedience to God. Pick up the “smooth stones” that He’s given you to use in battle. Take your seemingly meager possessions and share them in faith that God will multiply them to meet your needs and the needs of those He's given you to serve.
